Law Student Paul Cozzi Wins Our 4th Annual Legal Scholarship for 2017
Paul Cozzi’s impressive academic performance at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and his thoughtful essay made a very strong impression. Paul spent his last year in college volunteering for the Kobe House in Chicago, an organization committed to juvenile justice. Each week he visited a juvenile detention center on the south side of Chicago. He also worked for the Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement helping school children harness the power of words by participating in mock trials all around the city. According to Paul, “my goal after I graduate is to be a lawyer in Chicago. I want to defend individuals like the ones I met in the juvenile detention center, who lacked the education or resources to know or assert their rights. I also want to expand access to the legal system for communities on the south side.” It was clear that both of these hands-on experiences had motivated Paul to make a difference in his community……”People doubt my ability to make a meaningful difference in a legal career in Chicago. Life on the south side will never improve they say – expanding legal access won’t work. Perhaps they are right. I won’t know, however, unless I devote all my energy and enthusiasm to it.”
Beyond academic studies and life experiences, Paul has stated the law will give him the ability to to draw on a lifetime of reading, writing, and speaking to help people using the power of words much like Abraham Lincoln. We would like to congratulate Paul and wish him the best of luck in the future and we hope that you have a long promising career in the legal field!
